SpaceX is set to establish a second major spaceport in Louisiana to support future launches of its Starship rocket. The company plans to develop the facility on a former Exxon property in Vermilion Parish along the Gulf Coast, marking the end of a search that has reportedly lasted about seven years
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, while SpaceX is targeting 2029 for the first Starship launch from the new location.

The Louisiana Economic Development agency has provided a slightly longer timeline, stating that construction should begin by the end of 2027, with initial operations expected around 2030.

SpaceX says the project represents an investment of about $100 billion and will create thousands of jobs in the region.

State officials estimate that the facility could generate 3,000 permanent jobs over a decade, with an average annual salary of approximately $92,600, while construction could support more than 30,000 jobs at its peak.

The development comes as SpaceX continues working to make Starship fully operational and reusable.

The company has conducted numerous test flights since 2023, but it has yet to successfully return both the rocket’s booster and upper stage to the launch site during the same mission.

SpaceX must demonstrate reliable recovery, rapid refurbishment and frequent launches before Starship can achieve the high flight rate envisioned by the company. The Louisiana facility is expected to become more than a launch site.

SpaceX has described plans for a self sufficient spaceport featuring propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing facilities, deep water shipping infrastructure and an airport.

The company is also considering how the site could support its wider ambitions, including the expansion of Starlink and future satellite systems designed for artificial intelligence applications.

The project is expected to bring significant economic opportunities to Vermilion Parish, although environmental and workplace safety concerns remain important considerations.

SpaceX has said it is working with Louisiana and federal agencies to address possible effects on wildlife, fisheries and coastal habitats.
The company also plans to support coastal protection projects aimed at reducing erosion and strengthening the Gulf shoreline.
