Disney Agrees to Offer Jobs to Majority of Character.AI Employees

Disney has agreed to offer employment to most of the workforce of artificial intelligence chatbot startup Character.AI following the company’s bankruptcy filing.

The agreement could provide new opportunities for dozens of employees as Character.AI faces financial and legal challenges.

According to a legal filing, Disney has agreed to make employment offers to at least 60 employees, representing the majority of the startup’s workforce, with estimated annual compensation totalling approximately $60 million.

The development follows an earlier agreement under which Disney agreed to acquire certain Character.AI assets for $20 million.

Character.AI’s former chief executive officer, Karandeep Anand, recently became Disney’s first chief technology officer, strengthening the connection between the two companies.

The latest filing provides further details about the proposed transaction and the employment arrangements being considered as part of the deal.
The filing indicates that the vast majority of Character.AI employees who received offers from Disney accepted them.

However, the agreement remains subject to a process that allows other potential buyers to submit higher offers.
The arrangement is known as a stalking horse bid, meaning the proposed transaction establishes an initial offer against which competing bids may be assessed.

Despite attracting a large and active user base, Character.AI has struggled with high operating costs and potential legal liabilities.

The company has also faced regulatory scrutiny over the safety of its chatbot products, particularly their interactions with young users.

These challenges have raised questions about the financial sustainability of consumer AI services that require substantial computing resources while also facing increasing demands for safety measures and regulatory compliance.

Character.AI has been sued by the mother of a 14 year old boy who allegedly became obsessed with one of the company’s chatbots before dying by suicide.

The company has also faced government investigations relating to child safety concerns. These legal and regulatory pressures have contributed to uncertainty surrounding its future.

Disney’s proposed acquisition and employment offers could preserve some of Character.AI’s workforce and technology, although the final outcome will depend on the bankruptcy process and whether competing bids emerge.
