Prime Minister Carney Warns Foreign AI Platforms Could Threaten Canadian Interests
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that Canada’s dependence on foreign artificial intelligence platforms poses risks to national security, privacy, and economic sovereignty.
Speaking during the launch of the country’s new AI strategy, Carney said much of the data used by AI systems currently flows outside Canada, leaving the country vulnerable to foreign influence and control.
He argued that foreign AI companies could shape Canadians’ lives and markets without necessarily reflecting Canadian values.
In response, the government plans to build sovereign AI capabilities, including a public AI supercomputer, domestic infrastructure investments, and stronger legal protections for data privacy.
The strategy also includes a national AI literacy initiative designed to help Canadians identify misinformation, bias, and AI-generated content.
Officials say the measures are intended to ensure that Canada remains competitive while maintaining control over critical digital infrastructure.
