Comcast Introduces Wi Fi Motion Detection on Newer Home Routers
Comcast has introduced a new feature that turns some of its newer home internet routers into motion detection devices.
Known as Wi Fi Motion, the service can identify movement inside a home by monitoring changes in wireless signals and can alert customers through the Xfinity application.
The feature is available on newer Xfinity gateways, beginning with the XB7 models, and is offered on an opt in basis.
Customers who activate it can use the system to monitor activity inside their homes while they are away.
Comcast has promoted the technology as a way for households to gain an additional level of security without installing traditional motion sensors.
The system works by detecting changes in the Wi Fi environment caused when people or objects move around the home.
Because the technology uses existing wireless equipment, customers do not necessarily need to purchase separate sensors to receive movement alerts.
However, the convenience comes with privacy considerations. Comcast states that information generated through the Wi Fi Motion service may be shared with third parties in certain circumstances.
These circumstances can include law enforcement investigations, legal disputes involving the company, court orders or subpoenas.
The disclosure means customers may want to carefully review the privacy terms before activating the feature.
Although the service is optional, users concerned about how information about activity inside their homes could be accessed or shared may wish to understand the company’s policies before turning it on.
