Elon Musk Plans to Give Every American Child a Share in SpaceX
Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share of SpaceX in 2027, a move that could amount to a donation worth more than $10 billion based on the company’s current share price of $146.
The proposed giveaway would represent approximately one per cent of Musk’s estimated $1 trillion net worth. However, the billionaire has not explained how the distribution would be organised or how eligible children would receive their shares.
Musk said he intended to distribute the shares directly to the public, describing the proposed donation as the first of several planned contributions.
His announcement came shortly after artificial intelligence company Anthropic revealed plans to commit five per cent of its shares to a new public benefit fund.
Musk subsequently criticised the approach and suggested that companies should distribute their wealth directly to members of the public instead.
The proposal comes as President Donald Trump has introduced a programme known as Trump Accounts, which establishes investment accounts for children through the United States Treasury.
The accounts can receive stock donations from wealthy individuals and other contributors.
Musk, who reportedly spent approximately $300 million supporting Trump’s election campaign, has not confirmed whether his proposed giveaway would use the programme. He also did not immediately respond to requests for further clarification.
According to the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, the United States has more than 70 million children under the age of 18.
Musk owns approximately 849 million Class A common shares and more than 5.5 billion Class B supervoting shares in SpaceX, giving him substantial holdings in the company.
The proposed donation would therefore require careful planning to determine eligibility, distribution methods and the legal arrangements governing the transfer of shares to millions of children.
Musk’s previous charitable activities have largely been channelled through the Musk Foundation, which ranks among the largest private charitable foundations in the United States.
