Trump Awards Top Science and Technology Honours to Major Technology Executives
United States President Donald Trump has awarded some of the country’s highest scientific and technological honours to prominent executives from the technology industry.
During the Golden Age of American Innovation Summit on Thursday, Elon Musk, Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang, Google’s co founder Sergey Brin and AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su received the National Medal of Science.
Michael Dell of Dell Technologies and Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella were also honoured with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
The awards recognise contributions to scientific advancement, technological development and innovation in the United States.
However, the ceremony has attracted attention because several recipients and their companies have made substantial financial contributions to initiatives associated with Trump and his administration.
According to The New Republic, the awardees have collectively donated billions of dollars to related efforts, including presidential inauguration activities and projects connected to the White House.
Among the reported contributions, Alphabet and Microsoft donated to Trump’s inauguration fund and the proposed White House ballroom project.
AMD contributed to a political action committee supporting Trump, while Michael and Susan Dell pledged $6.25 billion towards the administration’s Trump Accounts initiative, a savings programme intended to benefit children.
These contributions have prompted questions about the relationship between major technology companies, political influence and the recognition of scientific and technological achievements.
During the ceremony, Trump praised the recipients for helping advance American innovation and expressed confidence that their work would strengthen the country’s global technological leadership.
He described the honourees as pioneers whose contributions would help ensure that the United States remained competitive against other nations.
The awards highlighted the administration’s stated commitment to supporting technological development and maintaining American leadership in science and industry.
The ceremony also took place against the backdrop of changing government policies affecting the technology sector.
Nadella received his award shortly after the administration indefinitely suspended Microsoft from the H 1B visa programme, which allows American companies to employ skilled foreign workers.
The development illustrates the complex relationship between the government and major technology companies, whose operations depend on innovation, international talent and an evolving regulatory environment.
