OpenAI pauses Pro subscriptions amid unprecedented demand for Astra

Last Updated: September 13, 2026By

OpenAI has temporarily stopped new subscriptions to its $200 per month Pro plan as demand for its latest artificial intelligence model, Astra, puts increased pressure on the company’s infrastructure.

The decision was announced by OpenAI product leader Thibault Sottiaux, who said the Pro tier places the greatest strain on the company’s systems because of the level of access provided to subscribers.

OpenAI said other subscription options, including its lower cost plans and application programming interface services, remain available.

The company had previously warned that it could temporarily restrict new Pro subscriptions if demand for Astra continued to grow at an unusually rapid rate.

However, it has not disclosed how long the suspension will last or how many people are currently attempting to sign up for the Pro plan.

Astra was launched on September 3 and has been introduced across several OpenAI customer categories, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business users.

The model is designed to provide stronger capabilities in areas such as reasoning, software development and computer use, making it a major part of OpenAI’s strategy as competition in the artificial intelligence industry intensifies.

The subscription pause highlights the infrastructure challenges that can accompany the rapid adoption of powerful AI systems.

OpenAI has recently increased usage limits for some of its services, but the surge in demand for Astra appears to have created new pressure on its computing resources.

The company has described Astra as a major step forward in artificial intelligence and has positioned it as part of a broader push toward increasingly capable AI systems.

For now, however, the immediate priority appears to be maintaining reliable service for existing users while managing the demand from customers seeking access to its most powerful plan.
