OpenAI Expands Codex With Mobile Integration for Developers

Last Updated: May 15, 2026By

OpenAI has announced a major expansion of its AI coding assistant Codex by integrating the tool directly into the ChatGPT mobile application.

The new feature enables developers to monitor and manage coding workflows remotely through both iOS and Android devices, signaling the company’s continued push into AI-powered software development.

According to the company, the update allows users to view active Codex environments running across devices and interact with ongoing development tasks directly from their smartphones.

OpenAI said users can review outputs, approve commands, switch AI models, and initiate new coding tasks without needing to return to a desktop environment.
The mobile integration is currently available in preview mode across all subscription plans.

The company described the feature as a major step beyond basic remote task management. OpenAI explained that the goal is to give developers a more flexible and continuous workflow experience, allowing them to remain connected to their projects from virtually anywhere.

The launch follows several recent upgrades to Codex aimed at improving autonomous coding capabilities.

Last month, OpenAI introduced background execution for Codex on desktop systems, enabling the AI assistant to handle coding assignments independently while users focus on other activities.

Earlier this month, the company also rolled out a browser extension for Google Chrome that lets Codex interact with live browsing sessions and web-based development tasks.

The intensified development of AI coding assistants reflects growing competition between OpenAI and Anthropic.

Anthropic previously introduced its own remote coding management feature known as Remote Control for Claude Code.

Both companies are aggressively expanding their AI developer tools as businesses increasingly adopt automated coding solutions to improve productivity and software development efficiency.

Industry analysts believe the rapid release of new features highlights the race to dominate the emerging market for agentic AI coding systems.

While Anthropic’s Claude Code has gained popularity among technology professionals and enterprises, OpenAI continues to strengthen Codex with broader integrations and workflow automation tools designed to attract a larger global developer community.
