Meta Says Advanced AI Development Taking Longer Than Expected

Last Updated: July 5, 2026By

Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the company’s efforts to develop advanced AI agents are progressing more slowly than originally anticipated.

Speaking during an internal meeting, Zuckerberg said building reliable AI systems capable of performing complex tasks has proven more difficult than expected.

Meta has invested tens of billions of dollars into artificial intelligence infrastructure, research and semiconductor technology as it competes with OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.

The company considers AI one of its most important long-term growth priorities.

Despite the slower progress, Zuckerberg reaffirmed Meta’s commitment to developing advanced AI systems and integrating them across the company’s social media platforms, messaging services and business products.

Company executives believe the investments will generate significant long-term returns.

Technology analysts say the comments illustrate the enormous technical challenges facing even the world’s biggest AI companies.

Building systems that are both powerful and reliable remains one of the industry’s biggest hurdles.

Investors continue monitoring AI development closely because success in the sector could reshape the competitive landscape across the global technology industry for many years to come.
