Meta is expanding its artificial-intelligence strategy beyond smartphones and computers with a new handheld device called Meta Charm. 

The company is positioning the gadget as another way for consumers to interact with its AI assistant, Muse. 

Muse has become an increasingly important part of Meta’s technology strategy since its launch earlier this month. 

The AI assistant is designed to perform tasks for users, including sending emails, shopping and making travel arrangements.

Meta’s decision to introduce dedicated hardware reflects the company’s broader ambition to make AI part of consumers’ everyday activities.

The company already has experience developing smart glasses and other hardware, giving it a foundation for experimenting with new AI-powered devices.

The move also comes as technology companies compete to determine how consumers will interact with artificial intelligence in the future. 

Smartphones remain the main platform, but companies are exploring glasses, wearable devices and other dedicated hardware.

For Meta, successful AI hardware could create additional opportunities to generate revenue while strengthening its ecosystem beyond Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. 

The company is continuing to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and products as it develops its long-term strategy.
