Internet Thinks Elon Musk’s xAI Trolled OpenAI’s ‘Dots’ Launch

Last Updated: October 2, 2026By

OpenAI launched a new product called Dots on Tuesday, introducing an always on artificial intelligence agent with a colorful, bubbly avatar.
However, attention quickly shifted to the domain name “dot.com,” which is owned by Elon Musk’s xAI and currently redirects visitors to the download page for the Grok chatbot application.

According to the domain registration records, xAI acquired the domain in July. It remains unclear why the company purchased it. One possible explanation is that the domain could attract users who mistakenly type “dot.com” when searching for another website.

However, xAI does not own the more obvious “bot.com” domain, which has led some users online to speculate that the purchase may have been connected to OpenAI’s product launch.

The speculation has fueled a theory that Musk or his team may have learned about OpenAI’s new product and deliberately acquired the domain as a prank.

An X user known for following xAI was among the first to draw attention to the domain, with the post later attracting widespread attention online.
There is no confirmation that xAI purchased the domain specifically in response to OpenAI’s Dots launch.

xAI has not publicly explained the reason for acquiring the domain, leaving the circumstances open to interpretation. Meanwhile, the more direct “dots.com” domain is reportedly owned by a long defunct company.
