IKEA Invests in Smaller Urban Stores to Reach More Customers

IKEA is investing heavily in smaller city-centre stores as the company adapts to changing shopping habits and rising urbanisation worldwide. The furniture retailer said consumers increasingly prefer convenient locations and faster delivery services rather than travelling to large out-of-town warehouses.

Executives explained that the company’s new strategy focuses on combining physical retail with stronger online shopping integration. IKEA has expanded home delivery services and digital planning tools to improve customer convenience and attract younger urban consumers.

The company is also increasing investment in sustainability initiatives including recyclable materials, energy-efficient operations and circular economy programmes that encourage furniture reuse and recycling. Environmental concerns continue shaping consumer purchasing decisions globally.

Despite economic uncertainty in several regions, IKEA says demand for affordable home products remains relatively stable as consumers continue spending on home improvement and interior design. Smaller living spaces in cities are also influencing product development trends.

Analysts say IKEA’s expansion strategy reflects broader changes in global retail, where flexibility, convenience and sustainability are becoming increasingly important competitive advantages.
