Identity verification company IDScan has confirmed that hackers accessed its systems and stole driver’s licence information, including records containing names, licence numbers and details from other government issued identity documents. 

The confirmation comes about a week after cybersecurity reports revealed that the company had allegedly suffered a prolonged cyberattack.

IDScan said the stolen information was taken from its cloud systems. 

The company, which is based in Louisiana, provides identity verification services to businesses including entertainment venues and cannabis dispensaries.

The breach is particularly concerning because the company reportedly holds more than 150 million driver’s licence records belonging to people in the United States and Canada.

Cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs previously reported that information from more than 150 million people was allegedly made searchable on a dark web platform. 

The database reportedly included photographs and other personal information.

Krebs confirmed the authenticity of the data after examining his own record, while other individuals, including high profile figures, also reportedly found their information in the database.

IDScan said it became aware of claims concerning the breach around September 1 and has launched an investigation. 

The company has not disclosed the exact number of people affected or explained whether hackers demanded a ransom. 

Authorities, including the FBI and Pentagon, have reportedly been made aware of the incident as investigations into the potentially massive exposure of personal information continue.
