Google Tests Direct Flipkart Purchases Through Gemini, AI Mode
Google has begun testing a feature that allows some users in India to purchase products from Walmart owned Flipkart directly through Gemini and Google’s AI Mode.
The experiment is part of Google’s broader effort to move its artificial intelligence services beyond product discovery and recommendations toward completing transactions.
Selected Flipkart products displayed through Gemini and AI Mode include a “Buy” button that takes users to a Flipkart checkout experience without requiring them to leave the AI interface.
The early test is limited to some users and a small number of products, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories.
Google has been developing technologies that allow artificial intelligence systems to participate more directly in online shopping.
The company previously introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard intended to allow AI agents to interact with retailers throughout the shopping process, including checkout.
The Flipkart experiment is expected to expand more broadly ahead of India’s festive shopping season.
Google has a financial relationship with Flipkart after investing about $350 million in the company in 2024.
For now, products from other retailers may still appear in Google’s AI services without offering the same direct purchase option.
