Google Secures 3.6 Gigawatts of Power From Constellation Energy
Google has signed a major power agreement with Constellation Energy to secure 3,590 megawatts of electricity for its operations in the United States.
The deal includes nuclear power and is aimed at supporting the huge amount of electricity required by Google’s expanding artificial-intelligence data centers.
Under the agreement, Google will purchase 890 megawatts of electricity for 20 years from upgraded nuclear facilities operated by Constellation. The first upgraded plant is expected to begin supplying electricity in 2028.
The companies also agreed to an additional long-term supply arrangement covering 2,700 megawatts of power.
The overall agreement is expected to support more than $4.3 billion in new investment by Constellation to increase generation capacity.
The deal highlights a growing challenge for technology companies: artificial intelligence requires enormous amounts of electricity.
Google, Microsoft, Amazon and other major technology companies are therefore increasingly making direct arrangements with energy producers to secure reliable power for their data centers.
For Constellation, the agreement provides long-term revenue certainty while supporting investment in its nuclear facilities.
For Google, securing additional electricity could help the company expand its AI infrastructure without being limited by shortages on the U.S. power grid.
