Danu Robotics Develops AI Powered Robots to Improve Recycling Efficiency

Last Updated: October 10, 2026By

Danu Robotics, a Scottish technology startup, is developing artificial intelligence powered robots designed to make recycling faster, more efficient and less expensive.

Founder Amy Ma became interested in the problem after working as a software developer at a London bank, where she discovered that recyclable materials collected in separate bins were being disposed of alongside general waste.

The experience prompted her to investigate the wider challenges facing the recycling industry and explore how automation could improve waste management.

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Danu Robotics has spent six years developing its recycling robot, known as H.E.R.O.
The machine is designed to identify and sort recyclable materials using an automated system that relies on a pincer claw rather than the suction mechanisms used by some competing products.

The company also uses artificial intelligence to improve the robot’s software continuously, with the aim of increasing its sorting efficiency and adapting to different waste management requirements.

The startup has begun attracting commercial interest, securing approximately $500,000 in signed contracts and letters of interest from two major customers.

More than 200 potential customers are also reportedly in its sales pipeline.

Danu Robotics believes its technology could compete in the estimated $20 billion recycling sorting market across Europe and North America.
Recycling facilities are increasingly looking for ways to reduce operating costs and recover more valuable materials from waste.

According to Ma, the financial benefits of automated recycling could make the technology attractive to waste management companies.
She estimates that a facility could generate approximately $485,000 in additional revenue by deploying the robot on its sorting line, compared with an initial investment of $160,000 and annual maintenance costs of about $24,000.

The company has raised $5 million in late seed funding to support commercial expansion and further product development. Its next priorities include making the robot more durable, compact and versatile.

Danu Robotics also hopes to expand the use of its technology beyond traditional recycling facilities.

Ma believes smaller versions of H.E.R.O. could be deployed at shopping centres, hospitals, airports and public events, allowing recyclable materials to be separated at their source.

The company is scheduled to participate in Startup Battlefield 200 at TechCrunch Disrupt, taking place from October 13 to 15 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The appearance is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase its technology to investors, industry leaders and potential customers.
