Rumours of a possible acquisition of robotics startup Physical Intelligence by artificial intelligence company Anthropic gained widespread attention across the technology industry over the weekend.

Although the reports were publicly denied by Physical Intelligence’s leadership, the speculation generated significant discussion because of the company’s growing influence in robotics research.

Reports later revealed that Anthropic and Physical Intelligence had indeed held acquisition discussions earlier this year, suggesting there was some basis for the speculation.

However, the negotiations did not result in a confirmed agreement. Physical Intelligence Chief Executive Officer Karol Hausman reportedly dismissed the rumours internally through a lighthearted message to employees.

Physical Intelligence has emerged as one of Silicon Valley’s most valuable robotics startups.Founded by investor Lachy Groom alongside leading researchers from top universities, the company has secured more than one billion dollars in funding and developed advanced artificial intelligence models that are widely used in robotics research.

Industry analysts believe the growing interest in robotics reflects a broader trend among artificial intelligence companies seeking to combine digital intelligence with real world interaction.

OpenAI has already reentered robotics development after previously closing its robotics division, while Anthropic has focused primarily on research involving AI safety and robotic capabilities.

The reported discussions also attracted attention because OpenAI is an investor in Physical Intelligence. This has raised questions about whether the company could have strategic rights or influence over any future acquisition involving one of its key investments, although neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has publicly commented on the matter.
