Chris Fall has stepped down as Director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), ending a tenure that lasted only three months.
His resignation follows the brief appointment of his predecessor, Collin Burns, who left the position within a week earlier this year. No official explanation has been provided for Fall’s departure.

Before taking charge of CAISI, Fall held several senior positions within the U.S. Department of Energy, including Director of the Office of Science and Acting Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy.

He also previously served in the Office of Naval Research, bringing years of government experience in science and technology policy.
CAISI operates under the National Institute of Standards and Technology and is responsible for developing technical standards, testing methods, and cybersecurity assessments for artificial intelligence systems.

Despite its role in AI governance, the agency was notably absent from the federal government’s recently announced AI safety initiative known as Gold Eagle.

The resignation comes amid renewed debate over artificial intelligence regulation following temporary restrictions placed on Anthropic’s AI models and growing concerns about the rapid advancement of Chinese AI technologies.

Industry leaders have also called for an independent organization to establish global AI standards similar to those used in the financial sector.
Although CAISI has published reports examining Chinese artificial intelligence models, little information has been released about its evaluation methods.

The agency has not responded publicly to inquiries regarding its testing procedures, leaving questions about its future direction following another leadership change.
