OpenAI Gains Ground on Anthropic Among Business Customers
OpenAI appears to be making progress against Anthropic in the competition for business customers, according to new data from corporate spending management company Ramp.
The figures provide an indication of how companies are adopting artificial intelligence services at a time when both AI firms are competing aggressively for enterprise customers.
Ramp data shows that Anthropic overtook OpenAI among its paying business customers in May, recording about 41 percent compared with OpenAI’s 39 percent.
By July, Anthropic’s share had increased to nearly 44 percent, while OpenAI stood at almost 40 percent. However, Ramp economist Ara Kharazian said OpenAI has recently been growing more quickly among its business customers during the current quarter. The information is based on spending activity from more than 70,000 businesses in the United States that use Ramp’s corporate cards and payment services.
Although the companies represented cover a wide range of industries, Ramp’s customer base has a strong connection to the technology sector. The company provided market share percentages rather than the actual amount of money businesses spent on each AI provider. The figures also demonstrate how quickly business preferences can change as AI companies introduce new models and services.
Although Anthropic currently holds the larger share among Ramp’s customers, OpenAI’s recent growth suggests that the market remains highly competitive and that companies may change providers based on factors such as performance, cost, privacy and practical business applications.
At the same time, the overall use of paid artificial intelligence services among Ramp’s customers continues to rise. The percentage of businesses paying for AI services surpassed 50 percent in March and approached 56 percent by July. This suggests that both OpenAI and Anthropic could continue expanding their business revenues even while competing for a larger portion of the growing enterprise AI market.
