Situational Awareness Pours $400 Million Into Chipmaking Startup

Last Updated: August 10, 2026By

Despite recent financial setbacks, AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness continues to make significant investments in the artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors.

The fund has reportedly committed another $400 million to Source Foundry, a semiconductor startup established by researchers from Stanford University. According to The Wall Street Journal, the latest investment brings Situational Awareness’ total funding in the company to approximately $500 million.

Source Foundry is developing technology designed to make chip production both faster and less expensive, positioning the startup within one of the most strategically important areas of the rapidly expanding AI industry.

Situational Awareness was established in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher who was still in his mid-twenties when he launched the investment firm. Despite entering the financial world without previous trading experience, Aschenbrenner reportedly generated strong early returns as the fund placed major bets on companies and technologies connected to AI.

However, the fund later encountered significant challenges as shares of companies involved in AI infrastructure declined. The downturn reportedly forced Situational Awareness to sell most of its public-market holdings in July to Citadel, the investment firm founded by Ken Griffin. The hedge fund reportedly retained its investment in Anthropic.

The transactions reportedly reduced Situational Awareness’ assets under management from about $20 billion to approximately $10 billion.

Even with the financial pressure facing the firm, Aschenbrenner has continued pursuing major investments in AI-related businesses, demonstrating the fund’s continued confidence in the sector.
