Artist Behind ‘This Is Fine’ Meme Settles Dispute with AI Startup
Cartoonist KC Green, creator of the globally recognized “This Is Fine” meme, has reached a settlement with AI startup Artisan following a disagreement over the use of imagery resembling his famous artwork in the company’s advertising campaign.
The dispute began when Artisan released promotional advertisements featuring a dog character sitting amid flames, a scene widely associated with Green’s original comic. In the advertisements, the character was accompanied by a different caption intended to promote the company’s artificial intelligence sales assistant.
Green publicly criticized the campaign, accusing the company of misappropriating his creative work. Through social media, he expressed frustration over what he viewed as unauthorized use of his artistic creation and suggested that supporters challenge the advertisements wherever they appeared.
The controversy quickly attracted attention online, prompting discussions about intellectual property rights and the growing use of AI-related marketing strategies. Green also expressed disappointment at having to divert time and energy away from his creative projects to address the issue.
Artisan maintained that it respected Green and his work throughout the dispute. Following discussions between both parties, an agreement was reached that satisfied their respective concerns.
As part of the settlement, the company removed the advertisements displayed in major cities, while Green withdrew his public criticism regarding the matter. Both sides have since indicated that the issue has been resolved amicably.
