Viral TikTok Campaign Sparks Unlikely Bid to “Buy” Defunct Airline
A surprising online movement has emerged following the abrupt shutdown of Spirit Airlines, as a TikTok creator rallied thousands of people around an unconventional idea: collectively purchasing the failed carrier.
The airline’s sudden closure left passengers stranded and over 17,000 employees without jobs, prompting widespread reactions across social media.
Amid the confusion, content creator Hunter Peterson proposed a crowd-powered revival dubbed “Spirit 2.0.”
His idea suggested that if a fraction of American adults contributed the cost of a ticket, they could theoretically acquire and relaunch the airline. The concept quickly gained traction online.
Within hours, Peterson launched a basic website to collect pledges. By the following day, tens of thousands of supporters had signed up, collectively pledging millions of dollars. The surge in interest even caused technical issues for the site, reflecting the scale of public engagement.
However, the initiative remains largely symbolic. The pledges are non-binding, and the actual cost of acquiring and operating an airline would run into billions of dollars.
Peterson himself has acknowledged these challenges while humorously calling for professional support from industry experts. Despite its impracticality, the campaign highlights the power of social media to mobilize collective imagination. It also underscores public frustration with airline disruptions and the appeal of community-driven solutions, even if they remain aspirational.
For now, “Spirit 2.0” exists more as a viral experiment than a viable business plan. Yet its rapid rise demonstrates how digital platforms can transform frustration into creative, if unconventional, action.
