MTN Rwanda has officially launched 5G service at 51 strategic locations throughout Kigali, including the Convention Centre, Kigali Heights, KABC, Gasabo, Kicukiro, and Nyarugenge.

CEO Monzer Ali emphasized that “we are commencing our project in the areas where connectivity is most critical—education, business, tourism, and the future of East Africa.”

Rwanda is one of the continent’s early adopters of large-scale commercial 5G, as evidenced by this deployment.

The enhancement of bandwidth and latency for enterprises enables the development of AI analytics, IoT connectivity, virtual reality learning, and remote surgery capabilities.

The upgrade has been described as transformational by local startup owners, such as Jeanne Uwase, the proprietor of a customer-service platform.

“We can now construct AI chatbots and VR demos in-house,” she stated. “Our expansion has recently doubled.”

MTN intends to expand its operations in the near future, with a focus on outlying districts.

Analysts from CNBC Africa anticipate that revenues will increase in Q2 2025 as a result of the introduction of new 5G data plans.

Kigali’s city officials regard this as a critical milestone that contributes to Rwanda’s Smart City vision, which is a critical enabler for telemedicine and virtual classrooms in rural areas, in addition to businesses.
