MTN South Africa, in collaboration with Lynk Global, effectively executed the initial satellite-to-mobile phone communication in Africa.

This accomplishment is a substantial advancement in the continent’s history.

The study, which was conducted in Vryburg, South Africa, demonstrated the feasibility of expanding mobile service to rural and underserved regions that lack conventional infrastructure.

The objective of this initiative is to address the digital divide by offering connectivity solutions in regions where terrestrial networks are either insufficient or nonexistent.

In order to assess the quality of voice communications and SMS, the technical demonstration employed conventional handsets that were connected to low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

This approach offers a practical solution for enhancing communication services throughout the continent, enabling even the most remote villages to access reliable mobile connectivity.

In order to further develop this service, MTN South Africa is investigating the feasibility of establishing partnerships with a diverse array of LEO satellite operators.

This is a critical step in the direction of ensuring that all individuals in Africa have access to digital technology.
