X Cuts Payments to Clickbait Accounts in Shift Toward Original Content
The social media platform X has reduced payments to accounts that rely heavily on clickbait and repetitive reposting, in a move aimed at promoting original content. The announcement was made by head of product Nikita Bier.
According to Bier, accounts categorized as aggregators have already experienced a reduction in payouts to 60 percent, with a further 20 percent cut expected in the next cycle.
He added that users who frequently label posts as “breaking news” without meaningful updates will also face reduced earnings.
The decision follows concerns that excessive reposting and sensational content were overshadowing genuine creators and limiting opportunities for new voices.
While the platform maintains its stance on free expression, it emphasized that it will no longer reward content practices seen as manipulative.
The move has triggered criticism from some users, including Dominick McGee, who questioned the lack of clarity after his account was reportedly demonetized.
Analyst Nate Silver also weighed in on the platform’s evolving structure, though his views were challenged by company leadership and owner Elon Musk.
