OpenAI and Nvidia have received support from the United States and the United Arab Emirates to construct Stargate UAE, an artificial intelligence infrastructure cluster.
This project is a companion initiative to the recently announced initiative to further develop AI infrastructure in the United States.
In January, the CEOs of OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle appeared alongside President Donald Trump and announced their intention to establish a new company, Stargate, to develop AI infrastructure in the United States.
The companies have announced their intention to allocate up to $500 billion toward the initiative in the forthcoming years.
A statement was released on Thursday by those three companies, as well as Nvidia, Cisco, and local champion G42, to announce their partnership in the construction of Stargate UAE in Abu Dhabi.
They stated that the initial component of the project, a 200-megawatt AI “cluster,” is anticipated to be operational in 2026.
In the statement, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that the initiative in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates is “a positive step toward ensuring that some of the most significant breakthroughs of this era – safer medicines, personalized learning, and modernized energy – can be developed in more locations and benefit the world.”
OpenAI stated in a separate statement on its website that Stargate UAE has the potential to provide AI infrastructure and computing capacity within a 2,000-mile radius, potentially reaching up to half the world’s population.
The company also highlighted that the initiative, which was decided in close coordination with the US government, is the first international deployment of Stargate, OpenAI’s AI infrastructure platform.
Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, stated that the initiative in the UAE would “empower the country’s bold vision – to grow its economy, shape its future, and empower its people.”
The facility will be constructed by G42, and it will be operated by Oracle and OpenAI. Nvidia will supply some of the most advanced processors currently available.
The recently announced data center complex in Abu Dhabi, which will be home to Stargate UAE, will have a capacity of 5 gigawatts, which is sufficient to power a significant city.
The complex, which will ultimately cover 10 square miles, will be constructed by the United States and the United Arab Emirates, as Trump announced during his visit to the country last week.
