US Tech Giants Pour Billions Into UK Amid Trump’s State Visit

US technology giants Nvidia, Microsoft and Google pledged billions of pounds in investments into the UK this week, marking a major show of confidence during President Donald Trump’s state visit. The announcements came as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and senior ministers met American counterparts in London, where Nvidia boss Jensen Huang declared the UK would become an “AI superpower.” The promises were framed as an early win for the government’s efforts to attract global tech capital into Britain.

At an event in Camden Town Hall, a specially produced video highlighted the UK’s scientific heritage from Ada Lovelace to Alan Turing, before listing dozens of start-ups. Unusually, the narration came from Huang himself, underscoring Nvidia’s growing role in Britain after fresh commitments of more than £2bn. He praised British innovation and urged entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity, while also stressing that the partnership with the US was built to ensure both sides “win” in the evolving global tech race.

Microsoft followed with a pledge of £22bn to expand its Stargate AI plan in Britain over the next four years, framing AI as a “general-purpose technology” akin to electricity or the internet. Chief executive Satya Nadella said the investment would help transform infrastructure and reinforce the UK’s role in the AI revolution. Google’s president Ruth Porat also joined UK leaders to open a new data centre in Essex, confirming a £5bn package directed at both infrastructure and its DeepMind unit.

Despite the celebratory mood, analysts and ministers cautioned that such announcements do not automatically translate into higher living standards or immediate relief for the wider UK economy. Britain’s business community has raised concerns over high costs and slow domestic investment, which contrast with the optimism projected by visiting US executives. Even Porat, while describing a “profound opportunity,” noted that Britain still had “work to do” to fully harness the benefits of these global partnerships.

The investments arrive at a delicate moment for the UK, as it struggles with sluggish growth and political unease. Yet the commitments by Nvidia, Microsoft and Google suggest Britain remains a priority destination for Silicon Valley’s biggest players. While Trump praised the “tech bromance” as proof of strong transatlantic ties, questions remain over whether these multi-billion-pound pledges can drive a long-term economic turnaround and restore wider public confidence in Britain’s economic prospects.
