President Donald Trump announced that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and two other Trump administration officials will convene in London on Monday to engage in new trade negotiations with their Chinese counterparts.

Bessent, who has been spearheading the administration’s endeavors to negotiate a deal with Beijing, will be accompanied by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, according to Trump.

The president posted on Truth Social, “The meeting is expected to be highly successful.” “I am grateful for your consideration of this issue.”

CNBC has reached out to the Chinese Embassy in Washington to obtain additional information regarding Trump’s announcement.

A request for comment was not promptly responded to by a spokesperson for the embassy.

Trump had initially disclosed that additional trade negotiations were in the works following a prolonged telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.

The scheduling announcement is made in the midst of a debilitating trade war that threatens both economic superpowers, as the U.S. and China have squabbled over numerous issues.

After breakthrough bilateral trade talks in Geneva, Switzerland, last month, the countries, whose total trade in goods exceeded $582 billion last year, temporarily reduced the majority of their tariffs on each other’s goods.

However, China has since accused the United States of undermining that progress on numerous occasions.

The chip industry was cautioned by the U.S. Commerce Department to avoid using Chinese semiconductors, prompting Beijing to protest.

The Trump administration’s recent announcement that it will revoke the visas of certain Chinese students studying in the United States was also met with opposition from China.

In contrast, the Trump administration has accused Beijing of failing to fulfill its commitment to the United States to authorize the export of rare earth minerals, which are critical minerals, as outlined in Geneva.

“There should be no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products,” Trump wrote following his call with Xi on Thursday.

He did not provide an explanation for the significance of this.
