Trump Administration Weakens EPA Authority Over Greenhouse Gas Rules

Last Updated: February 13, 2026By

The Trump administration has officially moved to repeal the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2009 “endangerment finding,” a foundational ruling that classified greenhouse gases as a threat to public health.

The decision marks a major shift in federal climate policy enforcement.

The original finding enabled the EPA to regulate emissions such as carbon dioxide and methane under the Clean Air Act.

While the current rollback focuses on vehicle emissions standards, analysts expect it to open the door to broader regulatory changes across multiple pollution rules.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin initiated the repeal process, which will require months of procedural review before taking full effect.

According to Axios, the change could slow the pace of emissions reductions by roughly 10 percent, though it is unlikely to fully reverse long-term trends driven by renewable energy growth.

Environmental groups reacted sharply, warning that the move could increase pollution-related health costs.

Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund, said the rollback would result in higher emissions and greater harm to American families.

Experts continue to caution that unchecked climate change could significantly impact both public health and the economy, with long-term projections estimating substantial increases in mortality rates and trillions of dollars in global economic losses.
