TikTok Ups the Ante with Enhanced Direct Messaging Features

Last Updated: September 1, 2025By

TikTok has unveiled new updates to its direct messaging (DM) feature, allowing users to send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in both individual and group chats.

The company announced the rollout on Friday, highlighting the platform’s shift from being solely an entertainment hub to becoming a space for more regular and personal interactions. With this update, TikTok aims to align its messaging experience more closely with other popular platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s iMessage.

The new voice note feature enables users to record and send audio clips of up to 60 seconds. This addition reflects growing communication trends, particularly among Gen Z users, who increasingly prefer short voice messages over text.

In addition to voice notes, TikTok now allows photo and video sharing within chats. Users can either capture new content directly through their camera or upload media from their device gallery, with editing options available before sending.

However, TikTok has placed restrictions for safety reasons: first-time message requests cannot include photos or videos taken outside the platform. Instead, new contacts are limited to sharing TikTok content only.

The company has also built in safeguards to protect younger users. Direct messaging remains unavailable to those under 16. For users between 16 and 18, TikTok has introduced automated systems to detect and block nude images before they are delivered. Meanwhile, users aged 18 and above can choose to enable or disable this protection through app settings.

This development follows TikTok’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its messaging services. In the past year, the platform introduced group chats with capacity for up to 32 participants and launched Creator Chat Rooms, giving creators and followers a dedicated space for interaction.

According to TikTok, the new DM features are being rolled out gradually and will be available to all users in the coming weeks. The company emphasized that the updates are designed to give users greater freedom of expression while maintaining a secure and safe environment.
