Reddit Expands AI-Powered Search to Five New Languages
In a move to make its artificial intelligence tools more accessible to a global audience, Reddit has announced the expansion of its AI-powered search experience to five new languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.
The update, revealed on Thursday, means that Reddit users in regions such as Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Italy can now access and interact with the platform’s AI-driven question-and-answer (Q&A) search in their native languages. Users who set one of these languages as their default will now be able to chat directly with Reddit’s AI to receive answers in a conversational format.
According to the company, the AI search system is powered by Google’s AI model, which enhances the accuracy and relevance of results across diverse languages.
Reddit’s AI-powered search was first introduced last year as part of Reddit Answers, a feature designed to complement the site’s traditional search tool. Since then, the company has been working to expand and refine the experience for its global user base.
During the company’s August earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman revealed that the platform’s search function attracts over 70 million weekly users, while Reddit Answers already serves more than 6 million users. Huffman also mentioned plans to unify Reddit’s search experience, integrating AI capabilities more deeply into the platform.
The move comes amid a broader industry shift toward AI-enhanced, chat-based search interfaces. Following the rise of ChatGPT’s web search integration, major search engines like Google and Brave have launched similar conversational tools to improve user engagement. Meanwhile, AI-first startups such as Perplexity are gaining attention for their intuitive, dialogue-driven search models.
With this latest expansion, Reddit aims to bridge language barriers and offer a more personalized, interactive search experience for its international community — marking another step in the company’s ongoing embrace of AI technology.
