OpenAI Postpones Rollout of ChatGPT Adult Mode Feature

Last Updated: March 9, 2026By

OpenAI has delayed the planned release of a new feature known as “adult mode” for its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT.

The feature is intended to allow verified adult users access to certain forms of mature content within the platform.

The concept was first introduced by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, who said the company planned to introduce stronger age-verification systems before expanding the range of content available to adult users. The feature was originally expected to launch in December.

The rollout was later moved to the first quarter of the following year, but the company has now confirmed another delay.

According to a spokesperson, the development team is currently prioritizing improvements that affect a broader range of users.

These priorities include enhancing the chatbot’s intelligence, personality, and overall responsiveness. The company believes that strengthening the core user experience will deliver greater value to its global user base in the short term.

Although OpenAI still supports the idea of offering expanded capabilities for adult users, the company says additional time is required to ensure the feature is implemented responsibly and effectively. No new timeline for the launch has been announced.
