OpenAI and Jony Ive Face Hurdles Developing Screen-less AI Device
OpenAI and renowned designer Jony Ive are encountering major technical challenges in their quest to build a screen-less, AI-powered device, according to a report by the Financial Times.
In May, OpenAI acquired io, a hardware startup co-founded by Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in a deal valued at $6.5 billion. At the time, Altman announced that Ive’s team would help “create a new generation of AI-powered computers.” Reports from Bloomberg suggested that the first products from this collaboration could debut as early as 2026.
However, recent updates indicate that the ambitious project is facing delays. The companies reportedly aim to develop a palm-sized device without a screen, capable of interpreting audio and visual cues from its surroundings to respond to user requests.
Key concerns remain unresolved, including how the device will handle user privacy, manage its computing infrastructure, and express a distinct AI personality. One insider revealed that the team is testing an “always-on” listening model rather than waiting for specific prompts. Yet, ensuring that the device only responds when necessary — and gracefully ends conversations — has proven a major challenge.
These ongoing technical and ethical questions could push back the device’s anticipated launch, as OpenAI and Ive continue to refine their vision of what the next generation of AI interaction should look like.
