Mozilla declared on Thursday that it will terminate Pocket, a read-it-later application that it acquired in 2017, on July 8.

Fakespot, the browser extension that assists users in identifying unreliable evaluations, is also being deactivated by the organization.

Mozilla stated in a blog post that Pocket has facilitated the saving of millions of articles and the discovery of stories that are worth perusing.

“However, the manner in which individuals utilize the internet has changed, and as a result, we are allocating our resources to projects that are more in line with their online requirements and browsing habits.”

The app and browser extensions for Pocket will be accessible to users until July 8. Pocket will transition to export-only mode after that date.

Users have until October 8 to export stored articles, which include items in their list, archive, preferences, notes, and highlights.

Mozilla did not specify the reason for the service’s closure; however, it has stated that it will persist in its efforts to facilitate the discovery and accessibility of “high-quality web content.”

Mozilla has announced that it will accomplish this by means of its email newsletter, New Tab experience, and other means.

The New Tab experience includes connections to your most frequently visited sites, your most recently visited pages, and your bookmarks.

Mozilla is discontinuing Fakespot due to the fact that “the concept resonated, but it did not align with a model that could be sustained.”

Pocket was able to establish a devoted user base over the years, despite the fact that the exact number of users was unknown.

The news has prompted users to express their dissatisfaction on social media.”

This change enables us to influence the next era of the internet, which will include the introduction of tools such as smart search, vertical tabs, and additional AI-powered features,” notes Mozilla.

“We will persist in the development of a browser that is more personal, more powerful, and still proudly independent, all while working harder for you.”
