Grok’s Latest Model Outshines AI Companions in Revenue Generation
While Grok’s raunchy, unfiltered AI companions may be garnering attention for their erratic and frequently NSFW responses, but it’s Grok 4, the most recent model from xAI, that has been the primary driver of the app’s revenue in recent months.
Appfigures, an app intelligence firm, reported that Grok’s gross revenue on iOS had increased by a staggering 325% to $419,000 by Friday, July 11, following the late July 9 launch of Grok 4 by Elon Musk’s xAI.
This figure was $99,000 the day prior to the Grok 4 launch.
In the days that followed the launch of the new model, Grok continued to generate revenue that exceeded its typical level. Gross revenue exceeded $367,000 for a brief period before declining to $310,000 on July 14.
Furthermore, the Grok iOS app had experienced a 279% increase in daily downloads to 197,000 by July 11, a figure that had been 52,000 prior to the debut of Grok 4.
Nevertheless, the increase in revenue and downloads was less significant the following week, on July 14, after the inclusion of Grok’s AI companions.
Despite the fact that the feature is exclusively available to “Super Grok” subscribers who pay $30 per month, it is not yet poised to be a significant revenue generator for the company, despite the fact that speculation about the companions likely drove more installations.
The day following the companions’ release, Grok’s iOS downloads worldwide increased by 40%, reaching 171,000 daily installations. However, revenue only increased by 9%, reaching $337,000.
Therefore, although it is evident that the launch had an effect, it is significantly less significant than the launch of the new AI model.
It is unsurprising that Grok’s iOS revenue could increase considerably with even a minor increase in the number of paying subscribers, given the expensive new subscription offering that was launched concurrently with the Grok 4 launch.
The company disclosed that it would provide a $300-per-month subscription known as SuperGrok Heavy, in addition to Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy, which is its most expensive plan to date.
xAI stated that the plan provides subscribers with early access to Grok 4 Heavy and other new features.
However, it is more expensive than analogous plans from other key AI providers, such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Also, Grok’s ranking on the U.S. market was elevated due to the interest in the new model. Grok was the third most popular app overall and the second most popular in the Productivity category on the App Store shortly after its launch on July 12.
The app’s overall popularity has decreased slightly in the past week, and it is now ranked 17th. However, it remains the second most popular app in the Productivity category, according to Appfigures data.
Appfigures specifies that it concentrated on iOS data for this analysis due to the fact that it is presently more comprehensive than data from Android devices.
Appfigures’ model requires additional time to analyze Google Play data, which is why the latter is currently only accessible until July 14.
