Google has announced its intention to evaluate a novel “AI Mode” for search, which would generate an entire page of artificial intelligence-generated results in response to user inquiries.

The new feature, which is scheduled to be made available to early evaluators, would include an AI Mode tab at the top of the Google search page.

Google claims that upon clicking the link, the user will be directed to a new page that provides “a more comprehensive and diverse” array of results that are propelled by AI.

Google currently provides AI Overviews, which endeavor to provide direct responses to certain inquiries at the top of the page.

AI Mode advances this by producing an entire page of results that are propelled by a customized version of the Gemini 2.0 model that employs multimodal AI and reasoning.

It is stated that AI Mode is designed to provide users with a “more diverse and extensive” selection of results than AI Overviews.

Google is attempting to avoid disrupting its primary revenue stream, search, by incorporating AI into its main products.

ChatGPT and other AI chatbots have been perceived as an existential threat to Google’s primary search business; however, data indicates that they are not having a significant impact.

Although the new AI Mode is still in the process of being developed, it provides a view into a novel approach to the operation of Google’s search engine in the future.

“With this new mode, people can ask nuanced questions that might have previously taken multiple searches — like exploring a new concept to comparing options and beyond — and get a comprehensive AI-powered response,” Google stated on Wednesday in an accompanying explanation.
