Ethio Telecom has onducted a workshop to unveil its new cloud-based core banking platform, which was specifically developed for Ethiopia’s microfinance institutions (MFIs) and savings cooperatives.
The workshop, which was themed “Empowering Microfinance Institutions,” provided attendees with a firsthand experience of how the system enhances productivity, enhances customer service, and ensures data security.
Ethio Telecom is in compliance with the national Digital Ethiopia 2025 roadmap by converting these institutions from manual ledgers and isolated servers to a scalable, online core banking system.
The solution seamlessly integrates with Telebirr, the country’s preeminent mobile-money platform, allowing rural consumers to conduct live digital transactions.
Representatives from more than a dozen MFIs and SACCOs participated in the testing of new modules under the supervision of Ethio Telecom, posed critical implementation questions, and prepared for the rapid deployment across hundreds of branches.
The potential impact is significant, as microfinance institutions (MFIs) that cater to low-income farmers, women borrowers, and rural entrepreneurs will experience improved account supervision, quicker loan processing, and a decrease in fraud risk.
Real-time data enables more intelligent regulatory compliance and risk management.
By scaling digital banking, this platform extends financial inclusion to millions in Ethiopia’s most remote communities, where Telebirr already processes billions of birr annually.
