‘Ethical’ Handbag: Meghan Markle on Fire for Paying Low Wages To Rwanda Workers

Last Updated: April 1, 2025By

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has faced criticism for low wages been paid to Rwandan women who are producers of an “ethical” handbag sold on Meghan Markle’s online shop.

The Rwanda workers who are employed by an organization, Cesta Collective, purportedly receive as little as ten cents per hour, with the prize of the bag been sold at £712.

Cesta Collective, employs Rwandan craftsmen with the stated objective of providing “dignified employment opportunities,” is responsible for the design and production of the purses.

Conversely, the disparity between the retail price and the wages of the employees has prompted ethical concerns.

Meghan’s economic pursuits, including her forthcoming podcast and recent investments, have been the subject of controversy, which has further intensified their visibility.

According to certain individuals, the ethical branding of programs that purport to assist workers from disadvantaged origins is compromised by the substantial markup that is applied to products.

Currently, there is a debate regarding the obligations of businesses that identify themselves as socially conscious and fair-trade procedures.

This case has brought these discussions to the forefront.
