The increase in the number of AI employment applications poses a risk of employing staff who are incompetent.
A careers adviser has stated that AI chatbots can be beneficial to candidates, but they should never supplant “human judgment.”
According to a business owner, employers are at risk of employing candidates who are incapable of performing the job due to the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) in job applications.
James Robinson, the head of advertising, stated that he and other business executives were observing a “substantial trend” in the use of generative AI chatbots by applicants.
He cautioned that candidates who were proficient in the technology could “engineer” the process without being “capable of performing the job.”
Megan Cooper, a career adviser, stated that artificial intelligence (AI) could be a beneficial instrument for job seekers; however, it should never replace “human judgment.”
In a recent survey of over 2,000 job applicants in the United Kingdom, it was discovered that just under half had employed AI to assist them in the application process.
According to Mr. Robinson, the proprietor of Hello Starling, an advertising agency in Cardiff, the company is receiving applications that are replete with AI-generated sentences in response to open positions.
“There are certain phrases that are frequently encountered. Individuals are consistently striving to make the most of their abilities,” he stated.
“They frequently assert that my qualifications are consistent with the objectives and goals of your organization.”
James Robinson has identified common phrases and “Americanisms” that have been stolen from AI chatbots and inserted into job applications.
He stated that the chatbot ChatGPT verified that these were phrases that it was likely to produce for a covering letter.
He acknowledged, “I find it exceedingly challenging to differentiate between individuals who are genuine and those who are robots.”
The responses from other business executives “really surprised” Mr. Robinson, who revealed his experiences of receiving AI-generated job applications on LinkedIn.
“I was genuinely taken aback by the messages I received from individuals who expressed, ‘I am in the exact same situation as you. How are we going to differentiate between them?'”
“Do we need to employ AI to combat this and gain control?”‘
“I believe it is a significant challenge in its own right, but I am not the only one.”
Nevertheless, Mr. Robinson stated that the technology was assisting applicants in writing more succinct applications and that the “appropriate” use of AI could be beneficial to his business.
Artificial intelligence (AI) enables computers to study and resolve issues in a manner that appears to be human. Although computers are incapable of thinking, empathizing, or reasoning, scientists have created systems that can execute tasks that typically necessitate human intellect. Their objective is to replicate how individuals acquire and utilize knowledge.
New content is generated using generative AI, which can simulate the appearance of human-generated content. This is accomplished through the acquisition of knowledge from an extensive array of extant data, including online text and images.
Megan Cooper, a careers consultant at Cardiff Metropolitan University, advocates for students to showcase their “unique qualities” in their employment applications.
Megan Cooper, the careers advisor at Cardiff Metropolitan University, stated that she was attempting to guide students through the ethical implications of utilizing AI while they were applying for employment.
Ms. Cooper stated, “AI can be utilized as a tool and as an aid. It is a resource that can enhance, but not entirely replace, human judgment.”
Ms. Cooper stated that in numerous instances, students were responding to employers’ expectations that candidates would possess a comprehensive understanding of Generative AI and be able to employ it with assurance.
“They are adamant about not being perceived as cheating or making an error in any capacity.”
Timothy Mitchell, a computer security student, believes that AI has the potential to be employed in a manner that “assists us rather than replaces us.”
“It is utilized by all individuals. Employers and tutors alike,” he stated.
Mr. Mitchell acknowledged that there were “certainly some concerns” regarding the expanded application of AI; however, he is of the opinion that these concerns are somewhat unfounded.
He further stated, “Humans are most adept at the creative process and the development of novel concepts. AI, on the other hand, is incapable of thinking beyond the boundaries of its training.”
He also suggested that generative AI could be employed in a manner that “assists us rather than replaces us.”
