Canada promotes CANDU nuclear technology for Poland’s second nuclear plant
Canada is pushing its as a leading candidate for Poland’s second nuclear power plant as Warsaw moves to reduce dependence on coal-based energy.
The proposal was discussed during a visit to Warsaw by, Canada’s Energy Minister, Tim Hodgson, who stated that Canada believes CANDU technology is the best option for Poland’s future nuclear development.
He added that Canada is ready to provide financial and technical support if Poland selects the Canadian reactor system.
Poland has already chosen to build its first nuclear plant along the Baltic Sea coast.
The country has now begun consultations with multiple international partners, including the United States, France, Canada, and South Korea, to determine the contractor for its second nuclear facility.
Hodgson also suggested that Canadian institutional investors could participate in financing the project.
He mentioned that Canadian pension funds, which have previously helped finance Britain’s Sizewell C nuclear power project, could potentially become equity shareholders if Poland adopts CANDU technology.
The minister said Canada is also willing to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to European buyers, noting that some European importers already purchase Canadian West Coast LNG shipments and swap cargoes internationally to meet European demand.
Canadian engineering company owns CANDU reactors operating in Romania, which serves as a reference example for the technology’s performance in the region.
The discussions are part of broader energy cooperation between Poland and Canada, following a nuclear power cooperation agreement signed last year.
