Bluesky Announces 40 Million Users, Begins Testing New ‘Dislike’ Feature
Social media platform Bluesky has surpassed 40 million users and is set to introduce a new “dislike” feature currently entering beta testing. The update, announced on Friday, is aimed at improving the personalization of user feeds and enhancing the overall quality of conversations across the platform.
According to Bluesky, the new tool will help the system learn what type of content users prefer to avoid. By registering a “dislike,” users will influence the visibility of certain posts—not only in their primary Discover feed but also in how replies are ranked and displayed.
This development comes after recent debate within the Bluesky community over platform moderation. Although Bluesky operates as a decentralized network, giving users significant control over the content they see, some users have pushed for the company to take a more active role in removing harmful or controversial accounts. Bluesky, however, maintains that its focus will remain on giving individuals more tools to customize their own experience.
The platform currently offers options such as moderation lists, content filters, muted words, and the ability to subscribe to external moderation services. Users can also detach quote posts to minimize unwanted viral attention—a practice that has often contributed to hostile exchanges on competing platforms like X (formerly Twitter).
In addition to the upcoming “dislike” feature, Bluesky is testing new ranking systems and design adjustments to encourage healthier discussions. A key part of this effort involves mapping “social neighborhoods,” which will highlight interactions from users who frequently engage with one another.
Posts and replies from those within a user’s closer network will be prioritized in feeds, making discussions feel more relevant and community-driven.
The platform also reports improvements in detecting and downranking posts considered toxic, spam-like, off-topic, or posted in bad faith. Another interface change will redirect users to view the full conversation before replying, in an effort to reduce repeated or context-lacking responses.
Bluesky is also making reply control settings more visible, giving users clearer options for deciding who can engage with their posts.
The company emphasizes that these updates align with its core goal: to build an online environment that promotes more authentic, thoughtful, and respectful communication.
