BBC Strives for Better Credit in Apple and Google News
The British Broadcasting Corporation has submitted a complaint to a UK antitrust regulator, alleging that aggregators such as Apple News and Google News undervalue the credit of the stories they publish.
Apple Insider has reported that the BBC is requesting that the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority mandate that Apple and Google more conspicuously credit news sources.
Although the CMA’s decision would ostensibly only apply to UK publications, any modification implemented by the aggregators would likely have an impact on other publishers as well.
“The BBC’s perceived value is undermined if audiences attribute the value they derive from our content and services to gatekeepers rather than the BBC,” the broadcaster stated in its complaint.
The BBC’s perceived value may be especially significant to it, as the majority of its funding is derived from a licence fee paid by British households.
Consequently, it is crucial that the broadcaster’s work is recognized and appreciated in order to preserve support for the fee.
Apple has recently suspended AI news summaries in response to complaints from the BBC and other publishers regarding their inaccuracy.
