Automattic has declared its intention to resume its contributions to the WordPress project.
This was contained in a blog post titled “Returning to Core” that was published within the week.
This is despite that it was only last month that it was announced that the 6.8 WordPress release would be the final significant release of 2025.
“We are prepared to resume our contributions and fully commit to the WordPress project after taking a break to reorganize, reevaluate, and strategize,” the new blog post declares.
“We anticipate that our contributions will be present in all of the most significant projects, including Gutenberg, WordPress Core, Playground, Openverse, and WordPress.org.”
“This return is a source of enthusiasm for us, as it represents the continuation of our unwavering commitment to the democratization of publishing for all, regardless of location.”
“Automattic has acquired a wealth of knowledge regarding the numerous applications of WordPress as a result of the hiatus, and it is now dedicated to fostering its “growth and prosperity.”
The post also mentions that WordPress currently powers 43% of the web.
However, sources who spoke with the media have stated that Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg stated in an internal post published last night that he intends to release a 6.9 release this year, which will include an admin refresh and a contribution from the “new AI team.”
This statement is in reference to the announcement made earlier this week that WordPress has established a new team to oversee the development of AI projects.
Automattic has been embroiled in a legal dispute since 2024, which pertains to the extent to which WP Engine, despite its scale and revenue, contributes to the WordPress project in Mullenweg’s estimation.
Automattic reduced its workforce by 16% last month, citing the necessity of the restructuring to enhance its productivity and profitability and become more agile.
