The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook telephoned Texas Governor Greg Abbott to either amend or veto a recently enacted law in the state that would necessitate the company to verify the ages of device owners.

The bill has not yet been signed by Abbott. However, Apple and Google have been collaborating with interest groups to oppose the legislation.

Apple specifically contends that the Texas bill’s implementation could jeopardize user privacy.

The bill would require that a minor’s App Store account be linked to their parents’ account in order to notify parents of their minor’s app installations and prompt them to approve or deny them.

“App marketplaces will be obligated to collect and retain sensitive personal identifying information for every Texan who wishes to download an app, regardless of whether the app is providing weather updates or sports scores,” stated an Apple spokesperson to the Wall Street Journal if the legislation is implemented.

The bill’s supporters assert that it will enable parents to exert greater control over the relationship between their children and their handsets.

Similar legislation is currently being considered by at least nine additional states.

Last year, Apple successfully prevented the passage of a bill in Louisiana; however, the state is currently reviewing the legislation.
