AI Answers Raise Questions as ChatGPT Cites Musk-Backed Grokipedia

Last Updated: January 26, 2026By

Content from Grokipedia, an AI-generated online encyclopedia developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has begun appearing in responses generated by ChatGPT, raising concerns about the spread of disputed and politically charged information across AI systems.

The development was first highlighted in a report by The Guardian, which found multiple instances where ChatGPT cited Grokipedia as a reference source.

Grokipedia was launched in October following Musk’s criticism of Wikipedia, which he accused of ideological bias. While some of its entries closely resemble Wikipedia content, others have drawn controversy for making unsubstantiated claims, including misleading narratives about HIV/AIDS, historical slavery, and transgender communities.

According to The Guardian’s analysis, ChatGPT referenced Grokipedia nine times across a range of responses, particularly on less prominent historical topics rather than widely scrutinized events.

The report noted that other AI models, including Anthropic’s Claude, have also cited the platform in certain cases.

An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company draws from a wide array of publicly available sources and viewpoints when generating responses.

However, the appearance of Grokipedia citations has intensified scrutiny around how large language models evaluate source credibility and filter misinformation.

The incident underscores broader industry challenges as AI systems increasingly rely on expansive datasets that may include biased or unreliable material.

As AI-generated knowledge becomes more embedded in public discourse, questions around transparency, accountability, and editorial oversight continue to grow.
