Afreximbank Launches “Africa Trade Gateway” to Kill Trade Frictions

Last Updated: March 2, 2026By

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has officially launched the “Africa Trade Gateway” (ATG), a digital ecosystem designed to revolutionize how goods move across the continent. Unveiled today, the platform is being hailed as the “connective tissue” for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). It allows businesses to complete complex cross-border transactions—from financing to settlement—within a single, unified digital window.

For years, African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have struggled with some of the highest trade finance costs and settlement delays in the world. The ATG addresses these “frictions” by integrating multiple tools like KYC (Know Your Customer) registries and payment systems. This means a trader in Lagos can now verify a partner in Nairobi and settle the transaction in local currency without needing a third-party intermediary in New York or London.

The launch has sent a wave of optimism through the manufacturing and export sectors. By removing the need to switch between different banking systems and intermediaries, the ATG significantly reduces the time and cost of doing business. Industry leaders believe this platform will finally turn the “paper integration” of African trade treaties into a practical, digital reality that boosts the continent’s internal commerce.

As global trade becomes increasingly fragmented, the ATG offers a localized shield for African economies. By digitizing the trade architecture, Afreximbank is empowering local manufacturers to scale their operations and access new markets with unprecedented ease. The gateway is not just a tool; it is a strategic reconfiguration of the African economy, positioning it for a future defined by digital speed and regional self-reliance.
