The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has established a $1 billion fund to support African filmmakers, with the objective of promoting the continent’s creative sector and showcasing African narratives on a global scale.
The initiative is a substantial effort to establish African cinema as a prominent participant in the global entertainment market.

The fund will offer financial assistance to filmmakers in the production, distribution, and marketing of films, thereby facilitating the creation of high-quality content that resonates with international audiences.
Grants and loans are also included in the initiative to assist filmmakers in obtaining advanced production apparatus and training.

The President of Afreximbank underscored that the fund is designed to provide more than just financial support. “We aspire to revolutionize African cinema,” he declared. “This is a platform that enables the world to hear African voices and witness African stories.”

The initiative will initially focus on filmmakers in Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya, with the intention of expanding to other countries over the next three years.
It also includes a mentorship program, in which experienced filmmakers will provide guidance to emergent talents, sharing their knowledge on marketing, production, and narrative.

According to industry analysts, the fund has the potential to revolutionize the African film industry by generating employment opportunities in the fields of international distribution, marketing, and film production.
Afreximbank endeavors to elevate African cinema on streaming platforms and at global film festivals by promoting high-quality African content.

Additionally, filmmakers will have the opportunity to participate in training programs that focus on international distribution and content marketing, which will assist them in navigating the global entertainment market.
The bank intends to organize a sequence of seminars that concentrate on the financing of films, the presentation of content to investors, and the monetization of content.

Afreximbank intends to establish a film summit in Q1 2026 to facilitate the connection between African filmmakers and global investors and distribution networks.
The fund is scheduled to be operational by this time. It is anticipated that the event will draw significant stakeholders from the global entertainment industry.
