Starlink Service Appears to Have Returned to Normal for Ukrainian Military

Last Updated: October 26, 2026By

SpaceX appears to have restored normal operations for Starshield, its military oriented version of the Starlink satellite internet system used by Ukrainian forces.

According to reports citing Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Evgeniy Khmara, the service is functioning normally again, although military officials are continuing to conduct tests.

Ukrainian authorities have not received a full explanation for the restrictions that reportedly affected the system.

The disruption followed a period of approximately ten days during which some Ukrainian drones reportedly lost internet connectivity when travelling at speeds of around 100 miles per hour.

The loss of connectivity affected military operations, with some drones becoming uncontrollable and others having to fly more slowly, potentially making them more vulnerable to interception.

The incident highlighted the importance of reliable satellite communications for Ukraine’s military operations.

Reports indicated that United States President Donald Trump contacted SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk and asked him to restore the service.
Musk has previously faced criticism over the company’s role in Ukraine, while both he and Trump have made public comments critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The reported intervention came amid wider concerns about the influence private technology companies can exercise over communications systems used during armed conflicts.

Earlier reports suggested that Musk had ordered restrictions on Ukraine’s Starlink access, although accounts differed over whether the decision had been discussed with officials in the Trump administration.

Musk subsequently accused Ukraine of violating Starlink’s terms of service by using the system to support offensive drone strikes.

He also warned that a complete shutdown of Starlink could have severe consequences for Ukrainian forces operating along the front line.

The apparent restoration of service has provided some reassurance to Ukrainian military officials, but questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the restrictions and the decision to lift them.

The incident has renewed debate about the dependence of modern military operations on privately operated satellite networks.

It has also highlighted the strategic importance of ensuring that critical communications infrastructure remains reliable, particularly when access to such systems can be influenced by decisions made by private companies.
