Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the enormous anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI by distributing malicious software disguised as a legitimate game demo.

With millions of players eagerly awaiting the next installment of the popular franchise, criminals have created websites designed to look like official Rockstar Games platforms and are using them to lure unsuspecting visitors.

According to cybersecurity researchers, the fraudulent websites advertise what appears to be a playable version of GTA VI. Users who click on the supposed download or play button are instead given a file that resembles a game installer.

Rather than launching the highly anticipated title, the program secretly installs malware capable of stealing sensitive information from the victim’s computer.

The malicious software is an information stealing program that can search web browsers for passwords, cookies and active login sessions.
Stolen session information can potentially allow attackers to gain access to online accounts without having to enter the victim’s password again.

In some situations, this can create additional problems even when an account has multi factor authentication enabled. The growing scam comes at a time when interest in GTA VI remains extremely high following several delays to the game’s release. The title is currently expected to arrive on November 19, 2026.
