Bluesky Confirms DDoS Attack Behind Major Service Disruption
Social networking platform Bluesky has confirmed that a recent prolonged outage was caused by a distributed denial of service attack.
The company said the platform experienced a large volume of unwanted traffic over a period of roughly 24 hours, affecting access for users.
Bluesky said it has strengthened its defenses following the incident and is continuing to monitor its systems.
The company did not provide extensive technical information about the source of the attack or reveal how much traffic was directed at its infrastructure.
A distributed denial of service attack occurs when attackers send an overwhelming amount of traffic toward a website or online service.
The objective is usually to consume the target’s available computing or network resources, making it difficult or impossible for legitimate users to access the service.
The incident has attracted attention from security researchers, with reports from an online security forum indicating that a group claiming to be connected to Iran has taken responsibility for attacks involving Bluesky.
However, those claims have not been independently confirmed by Bluesky, meaning the identity of the attackers remains uncertain.
The latest disruption is not the first major service interruption Bluesky has experienced this year.
The platform suffered another prolonged period of instability in April after being targeted with a similar flood of traffic.
It is not yet clear whether the earlier incident and the latest attack were carried out by the same actors or were otherwise connected.
